John earned the starting position at offensive guard his junior and senior on the varsity football team.  He became a powerful force upon the offensive line that helped lead the way for the Panthers to advance to the NCS Football Playoffs in 1985 and 1986. He earned All-Northern California Team, All-East Bay Team and All-DVAL Team honors.

John also competed on the Track and Field team all three years of high school. He was DVAL and NCS champion his junior and senior years.  He placed 2nd place at the NCS Meet of Champions his junior year and 3rd place as a senior, qualifying him both years to advance to the CIF State Track and Meet.  John was the voted as the Antioch High School Most Valuable Senior Athlete in 1986, as a two-sport varsity athlete in Football, Track & Field.

John earned an athletic scholarship to play football for the University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears, where he played his freshmen year. He transferred to Diablo Valley College for his sophomore year where he was selected All-Conference for the Diablo Valley College Vikings.
