Lawrence Worth Shaw Jan. 18, 1929 – Jan. 2, 2012 Resident of Antioch Worth was born in Elwood, Indiana and move to Antioch as an infant. He lived in Antioch for 83 years. Worth graduated from Antioch High School in 1946 and excelled as a three-sport athlete. After high school he served in the U. S. Army’s Occupation of Japan from 1947-1948 at the Yokohama 8th Army Headquarters. Upon his return to Antioch, Worth founded the Antioch Quarterback Club, a group who bought equipment, sponsored awards, and organized a “gala sports night” for AHS teams between 1957 and the late 1960s. Volunteers from the club built Antioch’s Rademacher Little League Field and founded the Antioch Junior Football League, where he also coached a team. Worth was the first director of Antioch’s Parks and Recreation Department, serving for 31 years until his retirement in 1991. In 1992 the city of Antioch opened and dedicated the “Worth Shaw Sports Complex” in his honor. In 2007 he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Antioch Sports Legends. Worth is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bertha, his son Robert (Denyse) of Nevada City, his son Michael (Shirley) of Livermore, and four grandchildren, Clark, Brian (Krystal), Cayce, and Mark. He is also survived by one nephew, Steven Zent and his family of Redondo Beach. He was predeceased by his mother, Golda, his sister, Wanda Zent, and his niece, Diana Zent Jensen. He was an active member of the VFW 6435, The Arnama Club, The Antioch Senior Citizens, The Antioch Sports Legends and The Antioch Historical Society.
